Build an executive sales dashboard for a retail chain

One page, four regions, twelve months: the interactive dashboard a VP actually reads.

The brief

A personal-care retail chain operates across NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The VP of Sales gets a 40-tab spreadsheet every month and reads none of it. You have twelve months of sales by region, province, and category, with targets. The ask: one interactive page that answers, at a glance, how are we doing versus target, where, and in what categories, with the December season clearly visible.

Your role

You are the BI analyst on the commercial team. Deliverable: a published, interactive one-page dashboard plus a 5-sentence executive summary.

Setup

  • Install the free Tableau Public app and connect it to retail-sales-ph.csv.
  • Check data types: month should read as a date, revenue and target as numbers.

Your tasks

Work through these in order, the way the engagement would actually run.

  1. 1Create KPI cards: total revenue, total target, and attainment percent.
  2. 2Build a monthly revenue trend line with the target as a reference line; the holiday spike should be obvious.
  3. 3Build a revenue-by-region bar chart sorted descending, with attainment percent as a label or color.
  4. 4Build a category treemap or bar to show the mix, and identify the leading category.
  5. 5Add region and category filters that drive every chart on the page.
  6. 6Assemble a single dashboard with a clear title, one message per chart, and mobile-friendly sizing.
  7. 7Publish to Tableau Public and write a 5-sentence executive summary of what you see.

Work like an AI-powered analyst

The modern analyst uses AI as a thinking partner, not a shortcut that skips the learning. Try these on this project.

  • Describe each chart choice to ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to argue for a better one; change only where the argument convinces you.
  • Paste your executive summary and have the AI tighten it to language a VP would forward.
  • Ask the AI for a checklist of dashboard design mistakes, then audit your own page against it.

Expected output

  • A published Tableau Public dashboard link you can put in your portfolio.
  • KPI cards, a trend line with the December spike visible, region bars with attainment, and a category mix view, all cross-filtered.
  • A 5-sentence executive summary with at least two specific numbers.
  • Compare your layout against the reference dashboard on this page: same shape, same numbers, your styling.

Check your numbers

Your results should match these. If they do not, that is the real learning: find out why.

  • Total revenue across the year is approximately ₱22.9 million.
  • Region shares: NCR about 38.7 percent, Luzon 24.6, Visayas 19.7, Mindanao 17.0.
  • The leading category by revenue is Beverages.
  • Roughly 39 percent of month-province-category rows hit their target, so the color story should skew warm.

The reference dashboard

This is the shape your finished dashboard should take: KPI cards on top, the trend next, breakdowns below, takeaway titles on every chart, and color used only where it carries meaning. Match the shape and the checkpoint numbers, not the pixels; your tool will style it differently, and that is fine.
